Hello! I'm Doula Bowie.

Originally from Hong Kong, I now live in Cartago, Costa Rica. I became a birth and postpartum doula in 2023. I trained under two highly experienced and passionate doula trainers, Nikia Lawson and Ann Grauer.

I believe that all families deserve a community to love, care for, and support them during and after birth. Nowadays, that may be hard for many people, but you don’t have to do it alone. I also believe that our bodies have ancient wisdom (that modern science have yet to figure out!) that know what to do, especially during birth. Having a baby should be a beautiful and loving experience, and I would be honoured to be a part of your journey.

In addition to her training and experience as a doula, she has also supplemented her practice with knowledge about hypnobirthing, strength training and stretching during pregnancy, and how to prevent vaginal tears during childbirth.

My dream is to one day open a full service birthing centre for low income and marginalised birthing people with a beautiful garden.

Mónica (Mama)
Our experience with Bowie as a doula was very pleasant and she was always there during my pregnancy. She gave me a lot of knowledge that helped me feel more prepared and confident during the whole process. Her calmness and empathy made the difference in every moment, allowing us to live this experience with confidence and serenity. One thing that helped me a lot, was when I was having contractions and Bowie was putting pressure on my lower back it helped me relax too much. We are very grateful for their support and commitment.
Wenna (Mama)
I had always been terrified of the pain associated with childbirth. The birth and pain management sessions led by Doula Bowie completely transformed my experience.  She thoroughly educated us on what to expect during childbirth and taught us effective techniques to alleviate pain. Bowie helped me trust my body and its capabilities - this confidence was crucial in achieving a remarkably smooth natural birth in under 3 hours.
I cannot recommend her sessions highly enough. They made all the difference for us!
Alonso (Partner)
Our experience with Bowie was very harmonious and full of calm. Her presence before, during, and after was a great companion. I can mention that a memorable moment was during labor, when I got to see her with her attentive and accurate constant embrace of mama (my partner) during her own process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do doulas / birth workers do?

  • Provide expecting families with physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth

  • Ensure you make informed decisions and honour your wishes for your childbirth experience

  • Be your trust companion throughout this whole new transitional experience

We do this by physically being present during your labour, having knowledge and resources at the ready for you as needs arise.

A doula may help you to improve birth outcomes, including reducing birth complications, obstetric trauma, and maternal and newborn mortality. In other words, doulas have a positive impact on the well-being of the entire family.

Can doulas deliver babies?

Doulas provide non-medical support and do not replace obstetric healthcare providers or midwives. We do not deliver babies, take vitals, prescribe medications, read or assess monitors, etc. If you would like a home birth, you will need an obstetric nurse, obstetrician, or midwife to deliver the baby at home.

How can a doula help me during labour?

During labour, your doula will help you to regulate your breathing and manage pain. Your doula will be your emotional, physical, and informational support. Since labour may start and stop a couple of times before intensifying, your doula will help you know when you can benefit most from their in-person presence.

What if I cannot afford your doula services?

All my services are charged on a sliding scale basis. The service will be the same no matter what you pay; I trust that you will pay what you can. If the price range or payment timeline doesn’t work for you, please let me know to figure out other arrangements. If you are a teenage mother (below 20 years old), please contact me directly to figure out other arrangements.
